Young Inspirational: Amarens Elise | Nationality Unknown

For the December issue of Yasmin & the Young Inspirationals, I was so excited to interview the incredible Amarens, famous among the exchange students as the founder of Nationality Unknown.

What started only 1,5 year ago has exceeded into the leading online platform for exchange students around the world. With over 13,000 fans on Facebook, and 9,000 followers on Instagram it’s time to meet the brains behind this phenomenon that is called Nationality Unknown. Let me introduce to you Amarens, your 20-year old average girl from the Netherlands. Currently studying Latin American Studies, after her year abroad and running her own business on the side.

What has contributed to the success of your platform?

I think my age helped me a lot, because the things that I write are usually to give people tips or to talk about problems. And for a lot of exchange students I am still sort of a friend of their own age.

Usually all the information and tips you get [about an exchange] are from volunteers who are 40 or 50 years old, so it still feels a bit different where it’s like parents telling you what to do and of course you don’t really want to listen to your parents.

Yet I say the same things that people have told me before I went on an exchange, but people listen more to me, because it feels like a friend talking to them and it feels like there’s someone who understands what it’s like to be young and what it’s like to try to fit in to a new family. I’m just trying to help them!
