10 Life Lessons From Forrest Gump

Pure Heart. Pure Soul. Pure Love.

One of my all time favourite movies, hands down, is Forrest Gump! The time it is set in, the events happening, and don’t even get me started on Tom Hank’s acting. Every thing about that movie is just genius. Although it’s my favourite movie, it has been ages since I’ve watched it, and every single time I end up bawling my eyes out during the entire movie.

I’m a very sensitive person in the sense that I get touched easily by beautiful events, movies, videos and anything inspiring. There’s a difference between crying at a movie because it’s a sad movie, or crying because it touched you deep inside. This movie is definitely the second one.

Forrest experiences many things in his life, and it’s a list that certainly doesn’t disappoint! Being an All-American player, meeting three Presidents, being a US Ping Pong champion, and receiving the Congressional Medal of Honour to name a few. What makes him so special is the way he floats through life so effortlessly by simply living and going with the flow.

This inspired me to write a list of life lessons we can learn from Forrest Gump.

Forrest Gump

1. Listen to your heart

Forrest always reacts to his gut instinct, even if it may get him into trouble. That gut instinct is going to take you further than listening to what other people tell you to do. You may even save someones life, Lieutenant Dan will forever be grateful for Forrest’s heroic action. Just know that the heart always tells you to do the right thing, even when everyone tells you not to.

2. Treat everyone equally

Whether it’s the lady at the bus station, a member of the Black Panther or the President of the United States, Forrest treats everyone with equal amount of respect, no matter their race, heritage or position in the social ladder. A person’s simply a person, so treat everyone how you would like to be treated, with love and respect.

3. Cherish true friendships

There is no friendship like Bubba and Forrest, they clean together,  fought together and were completely loyal to each other. They made a promise to one another that after the war ended they would start their own shrimp company, Bubba-Gump, and Forrest pursued that dream even after Bubba’s death in the Vietnam War. Many people come and go in your life, but it’s the bond you create with a certain few that are just worth fighting for, and should be cherished forever. You know its a true friendship when it comes from two sides without costing any effort and everything flows naturally, so don’t take that for granted or let that go!

4. Expect the unexpected

The most famous quote of all time and mama Gump was truly spot on  with “Life is like a box of chocolates: You never know what you’re gonna get.”. Live life with an open mind, as you never know what doors may open to you on your life journey.

Forrest Gump

5. Believe in love

His one true love he never gave up on was Jenny. She weaved in and out of his life many times, but never ever did he stop loving her deeply and believing in it so truly. His patience and positive thinking never made him feel alone. Like he says to Jenny “I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.”, everyone can love and has a chance of falling in love, you just have to be open to it by believing it exists even in the darkest times.

6. Put the past behind you

I live strongly by ‘everything happens for a reason’, and stand by that with all my heart. Your life moves the way it does, so you can make mistakes and learn from them to move forward. Another beautiful quote by Forrest “My mama always said you got to put the past behind you before you can move on.” Don’t take the past to the future, live in the present and the art of now.

7. Work hard

Being successful or living a life you dreamed of means working harder than the average person. Forrest has an IQ of 75, but that never stopped him achieving just a much or even more than everybody else. Be strong and determined to do what it takes for the things you truly want in life, and that involves working hard! It will truly pay off in the long run.

8. Try something new

Don’t be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone, you never know what natural talents are luring inside you waiting to be exposed. Someone asks Forrest to play ping pong, and shows him how it’s done. After that he let’s it all flow naturally. Just try, and who knows, you might even be surprised and use it for your career in some way.

9. Find your role model

I believe it is so important to have someone as a constant inspiration, a motivator that keeps you going and teaches you the lessons of life. Forrest’s mentor was his mother who he quotes beautifully throughout the whole movie. He learns from her, adapts it to society, makes a mistake and learns from that lesson. Find your own mentor to guide you through your life.

10. And always remember to Run, Forrest, Run!!

In other words keep moving in a certain direction and don’t stop till you reach your destination. “When you get tired, sleep. When you get hungry, eat. When you have to go, you know, go!” No distractions just pure focus and like Lt. Dan told Forrest “Follow your believes, be true to yourself. Don’t get side-tracked. It’s good to expand your horizon, but stick to your plan.” Do what you love, and completely go for it!!

Forrest Gump

Thank you Mr Gump for being such an inspiration by staying close to your heart. It’s a movie I’d advice everyone to watch and I can’t explain how utterly inspiring this movie truly is. I’d love to hear what you think of Forrest Gump, and feel free to share any movies that have inspired you too.

“I don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we are all just floating around accidental like on a breeze. But I think, maybe it’s both. Maybe both is happening at the same time.”
– Forrest Gump

Keep dreaming and believing!

Love, Y x
